The name is based on the initial inventors of the madras fabric style, the Eastern Indians & especially on the black & red check fabric that was exported from Madras, India. Madras fabric is now made in a variety of checked patterns.
It’s a more intricate pattern than a lot of plaids. If you use google images you’ll see a good selection.
